First Critical Mass bike ride in Bochum took place on April 20, 2002 with 20 cyclists. ^[1]

Between 1999 and 2001 monthly official bicycle demonstrations in Bochum called "Bocycle" were held to reveal how many the city climate would gain if bicycles and not the cars dominated the city. This demonstrations were arranged by the "Bündnis Umweltfreundlicher Stadtverkehr (BUS)". In 2001 the BUS decided not longer to arrange the bicycle demonstrations but instead Critical Mass rides should be held. ^[2]
